Seriti Green, the renewable energy subsidiary of South Africa’s mining and energy company, Seriti Resources, has secured the financial backing for the first phase of the Ummbila Emoyeni wind farm.
Seriti Green, the renewable energy subsidiary of South Africa’s mining and energy company, Seriti Resources, has secured the financial backing for the first phase of the Ummbila Emoyeni wind farm, which is on track to become Africa’s largest wind power project. The funding for this initial phase is provided by Standard Bank and Rand Merchant Bank.
“Our team has worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone, and we couldn't be prouder,” the company said in a statement announcing the deal. “This achievement reflects our dedication to deliver clean energy at scale and positions us for continued growth and success.”
Located in the Highveld of Mpumalanga province, Ummbila Emoyeni is a 900MW hybrid renewable energy facility that includes 750MW of wind energy, 150MW of solar PV, and 800MWh of battery storage. The project has been recognized as a Strategic Infrastructure Project and has received Environmental Authorisation, paving the way for construction to begin.
The first phase, Ummbila Emoyeni One, is a 155MW wind energy facility with 25 turbines. Scheduled to commence operations in 2025, the ZAR 4 billion ($234 million) wind farm will supply power to Seriti’s coal mining operations, providing about 500 GWh of electricity annually, which equates to roughly 75% of the Group’s energy needs. This phase is integral to Seriti’s decarbonization journey and will also establish the shared grid infrastructure essential for the project’s subsequent phases.
Upon full commissioning by 2027, the project is expected to supply electricity to nearly 500,000 South African households, while also creating jobs and attracting significant capital investment to the region.
South Africa has been facing an electricity crisis marked by reliance on coal and frequent blackouts. In response to the challenges, the country’s state utility Eskom has embraced third-party wheeling since 2008, which allows the delivery of energy from generation plants to end-users via the existing grid. Renewable energy generated by Seriti Green will be wheeled through South Africa’s grid to Seriti Resources’ coal mining operations.
In a strategic move to enhance its renewable energy portfolio, Seriti Green completed the acquisition of Windlab South Africa on December 1, 2022, and is in the process of acquiring Windlab East Africa. These acquisitions are part of Seriti Green’s strategy to establish itself as a diversified energy producer with a lower carbon footprint and are foundational for the development of renewable energy projects across Africa. The acquisitions mark a significant step in the evolution of Seriti Green since its announcement in November 2021.
