This strategic move was complemented by the commissioning of a 110-kilometer natural gas pipeline by Genser Energy, which will serve as the primary fuel source for the new plant.

Located in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region, the thermal power plant is the first of its kind in the city and represents a major step in the government’s commitment to equitable infrastructure development.
The facility, previously known as the AMERI Power Plant, was relocated from the Volta River Authority’s Aboadze base in the Western Region so that it can help meet electricity demand in Ghana’s middle belt.
“The Ashanti region is renowned for the development of small and medium scale commercial and industrial enterprises. With enhanced electricity supply, these enterprises will expand and offer further employment opportunities to our youth,” President Akufo Ado stated during last Wednesday’s commissioning ceremony.
The President also highlighted the project’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim of achieving full electricity access by the end of the year. Ghana currently boasts an 88% national electrification rate, one of the highest on the continent.
The Volta River Authority, Ghana’s state power generating and distribution company, was praised for their engineering expertise in the installation of the power plant’s components. “They have demonstrated that Ghanaian engineers from a publicly owned institution can rise up to the task of finding engineering solutions to build our nation,” the President remarked.

In a related development, the official inauguration of Genser Energy’s new gas pipeline, a segment of a larger 430-kilometer network, promises to provide industries with a steady and affordable energy source. “The commissioning of this pipeline marks a milestone in our mission to provide cost-effective and reliable energy solutions to the Ashanti Region and the wider Ghanaian community,” Board Chairman of Genser Energy Okotwareasuo Osei-Nyampong VI said.
